The School of Mathematics, Physics & Statistics in SUES was formerly the Department of Fundamental Studies in 1978. In order to adapt itself to the rapid development of SUES, it was renamed as School of Fundamental Studies in 1995.

Under the leadership of the SUES CPC Committee, and with the vision of Modern Application-oriented Engineering University, the School is dedicated to creating a new platform for practice and growth in first-level disciplines of mathematics, physics, and statistics. In 2017, the School received its current name.

The School is composed of the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Engineering Mathematics, the Department of Applied Physics, the Department of Applied Statistics, the Physics Experiment Center, the Applied Mathematics Research Institute, the Dean's Office, and the Student Affairs Office. The Center of Fundamental Experimental Studies owns a comprehensive experimental building covering 3,923 square meters, which houses various kinds of instruments costing RMB 12,000,000 for teaching and researching work.

The School has an excellent faculty of 96, 86 of whom are teaching faculty. 64% of the teachers have doctoral degrees, among whom four are professors accounting for 5%, and 29 are associate professors accounting for 34%. The percentage of faculty professors and associate professors account for 39%. Sixty-two (82%) teaching faculty graduated from 985 and 211 top universities. Due to their outstanding performance, many teachers have been awarded glorious titles, such as Labor Models in Shanghai, Outstanding Teachers sponsored by Bao Steel Educational Fund, New Long March Vanguards of Shanghai, Yucai Awards in Shanghai, and Model Teachers of SUES. Additionally, the School has been awarded the honor as Advanced Group.

Apart from offering the fundamental courses of mathematics and physics to postgraduates, undergraduates, and vocational undergraduates on campus, the School also established a series of teaching and research management in the fields of Operations and Cybernetics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Optical Engineering.

Meanwhile, the School has accomplished disciplinary construction with web-delivery for several university model courses: Advanced Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Linear Algebra, Complex Function and Integral Transformation, College Physics, and College Physics Lab.

The School attaches great importance to enhancing students' overall quality, conducting outside-classroom learning & extracurricular activities actively in mathematics and physics, establishing a Student Innovation Studio, along with the mission to nurture high-caliber, practical, innovative engineering talents with comprehensive strengths and competitiveness. Furthermore, the School takes an active part in organizing students to participate in national and international competitions, including the National Mathematics Modeling Competition for College Students, American Mathematical Contest in Molding for College Students, National Mathematics Modeling Competition for Graduate Students, Partially National Physics (Shanghai District) Contest for College Students and Shenzhen Cup National Mathematics Modeling Summer Camp.

The School has a Mathematical Modeling Innovation Laboratory, a Cloud Computing Laboratory, a Statistics Laboratory, and an extensive Data Analysis and Quantitative Investment Laboratory. The physics laboratory and mathematics laboratory have an experimental area of 3,825 square meters, with advanced teaching and scientific research instruments worth more than 10.95 million yuan. The School actively carries out industry-academia-research cooperation and has established the Reagan Big Data Analysis and Quantitative Investment Open Laboratory for school-enterprise collaboration, the Shanghai ChengKuo Financial Statistics and Optimization Open Laboratory, and the industry-academia-research practice base.

After years of effort, the School has achieved tremendous and sustainable development in academic research. The School has been granted over 40 programs and projects nationally and municipally, including the Key Program of NSFC, General Program of NSFC, National Science Fund for Excellent Youth Scholars, Tian Yuan Special Fund of NSFC, Special Found for Theoretical Physics Research Program, Scientific Research Found for the Returned Overseas Chinese Scholars of Chinese Ministry of Education, Natural Science Found of Shanghai, and Shanghai Chen Guang Program (for talents and professionals). Additionally, the School's scientific research funds accumulative total is over 10 million yuan, from which 7 million yuan is sponsored above at the provincial and ministerial level. Other funds also add up to 2 million yuan, covering over ten cross-scientific research projects. Meanwhile, an accumulative total of 170 first author SCI papers have been quoted and published, among which 50 first author papers are JCR CAS top listing papers, 20 first author papers are high-level papers in leading journals of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and three professional textbooks have also been published.
